There is an emphasis on yarn selection, structure, design and colour for wearable and sculptural pieces. Workshops include:

  • An introduction to the techniques of Ply-Split Braiding
  • Development of Ply-Split Braiding Techniques
  • Ply-splitting in Three dimensions
  • Exploring Ply-split darning methods traditionally used by the Sarakatsani people of Greece
  • The design and use of decorative twisted cords

Workshops

If you are interested in learning or developing Ply-Split Braiding, do contact me at juliehedges49@gmail.com and we can discuss the possibilities for individual workshops, tutorials and group bookings in the future.

Demonstrations and Talks

I give a talk on ‘Ply–Split Braiding; From Camels to Contemporary Creations’ which covers my research on the colourful textiles and camel trappings from Rajasthan and Gujarat, North West India and the relationship between these and my developments in the ply-split braiding technique. I bring a good range of slides from my study visits to India and show my collection of animal-related Indian Textiles Regalia as well as my own ply-split braids and sculptures. I give a demonstration of cord making and Ply-Splitting. I am happy to tailor talks and workshops to your requirements.

Teaching

I regularly teach small groups in my studio and I am happy to teach individuals by arrangement.
